We are very often presented a peaceful, idyllic picture of what the world of Islam is in its ideal form. At the same time, we must deal with the stark reality that no philosophy in human history has justified as much genocide as has Islam, most noticeably, the oft ignored genocide of the Hindu Indians that created a Muslim population on the Indian subcontinent. For those unaware of this historical occurrence, this was possibly the worst genocide in human history and may numerically dwarf Stalin's purges, Mao's Cultural Revolution, the Spanish genocide of the Native American Population (Author Francois Goutier writes extensively about this subject as he tried to quantify exactly how many people died http://www.rediff.com/news/2001/apr/30franc.htm). The number killed may approach 100 million. According to the Encyclopaedia Americana, the words "Hindu Kush", the name given to the mountains at the west end of the Indian subcontinent, mean "slay the Hindus" or "Hindu slaughter". This name may well have been given as a result of the bloody Islamic invasion of India. As per Islamic belief, Hindus are kaffir par excellence and the Surah of the Sword commands their killing.
When faced with this direct link between the Islamic orthodoxy and such a horrendous event, how can anyone tell someone else that the teachings and practice of Islam are inherently peaceful and good? The answer lies in the capacity of civilized people for self-delusion and the Islamic religious practice known as "Al-Taqiyya". As people with a basic morality rooted in western Christianity, Americans have an aversion to lying. "Do what you say you will do" is a mantra of American people and honesty is sacrosanct in Judaism and Christianity, as falsehoods violate the 10 Commandments. Christians are instructed not to lie about their faith upon pain of death. Educated people should know, however, that religiosity and positive values are not mutually exclusive. Many religions today, including some African animist faiths, Indian Tantrism, and Western Satanism have been found to include human sacrifice among their rituals. Realizing this basic fact should lead the average educated person to realize that religiosity and positive values do not always accompany each other. The tolerance-at-all-costs crowd works very hard to deny this basic fact and has a great capacity for self-delusion, believing that conversation and relativism are a solution to whatever differences exist. They have largely succeeded in making their delusional belief structure mainstream.
While the left has laid the groundwork for Islam to be permitted to make itself appear to be a peaceful faith in the public eye, it has also taken an affirmative action on the part of Muslims to misrepresent the orthodoxy of religion as peaceful. This practice of misrepresenting Islam for the purposes of Islam's self-interest is one that not only is backed up by the behaviors of Mohammed, who regularly deceived opponents to gain advantages and encouraged followers to do the same (Mohammed encouraged of the murder of Abu Afak by a Muslim that deceived Afak), but is Koranic obligation upon all Muslims. The word "taqiyya" is translated into English to mean "dissimulation" or "the hiding of something". The Koran describes the practice in Verse 3:28 when it warns Muslims against making friends with unbelievers and tells them to guard themselves against revealing their faith to non-believers. There are also two instances in the Koran in which believers lied about their faith when under the threat of compulsion. Al-Bukhari, a body of Hadith that is regarded as 100% authentic by both Sunni and Shia Muslims describes the practice further: "We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them." and "The Taqqiya is allowed until the Day of Resurrection". So, in short, lying is prescribed by Islam for the purpose of hiding the more malignant aspects of the Islamic faith and is doing an impressive job of shaping the debate around the role of Islam in the modern world.
